so governor romney really needed a game changer tonight. i hate to say this but i find myself agreeing with chris christie. governor romney really needed to turn the world upside down. he really need ad game changer tonight. i think you would be sore pressed to find that magic moment that was the game-changer tonight. and, so, that was my view in watching it anyway. i also thought the president did a very good job finally nailing governor romney down to admitting he does want to turn medicare into a voucher program. i thought the president pushed back on that very effectively, when he said, hey, if you're 55 you might want to listen to this. i'm still not sure exactly what governor romney was saying about his promise of $5 trillion in tax cuts. i mean i heard the platitudes but i didn't hear any specifics. and, i thought he was doing a lot of shape shifting on that one. >> governor, good evening. this is rachel. we've been talking on set here about our surprise we didn't hear more from the president on his standard attack line. we thought w

it would be nice to hear mitt romney talk about how he helps the wealthy and middle class. what's his plan to get people out of poverty. >> this is the story behind the numbers. you can have unemployment and still have poverty because of the nature of wage stagnation. you were saying in the break that you thought the october surprise happened in september. >> we decided. >> because of early voting, as you talked about, the october surprise actually has already happened. it happened in september and it was that 47% video where you had mitt romney unplugged, unfiltered in a nice cocoon with his upper 1% friends or disparaging, belittling the 47% and not just saying they're not going to vote for me. but saying i can't do anything for them. they don't want to take responsibility for their lives. that's unbelievably damaging. for there to be a summit on poverty, cgi to have mitt romney talk about that. people would sit back -- >> that feels like that would be rich in the debate. >> that is the other key part of it. same comparison to the 2008 gaffe of clinging to their gungs and

>> because we're in this weeshd cycle here where barack obama is a president with over 8% unemployment. usually that means you lose, but mitt romney has run a lackluster campaign, particularly in august and september. you are starting to see in the swing states barack obama pulling ahead in virtually all of the polls, and if he comes and gets any more momentum, he has the momentum right now, obama, and he doesn't get stopped at all, then it could be a break-out for the president. on the other hand, mitt romney tonight is such an underdog, people don't think he is that fantastic of debater. they're underestimating him. he is quite good. he comes and seeming to have parody with the president and maybe get that zinger they're rehearsing so hard, get one in that works and hits this youtube media cycle playing over and over again. romney could turn into the swing states and there will be a dead heat again, and we'll be marching into october with it just being a toss-up. nobody really knowing who is ahead. >> doug, how important is this? we'll be watching. some people will be listening to it
